Used capping technology
for filling and packaging lines

Kahl & Schlichterle deals in used capping technology for filling lines in the drinks and food industries. This includes capping machines and capping units for various containers and closure types, such as crown caps, aluminium screw caps, plastic screw caps, twist-off caps, natural and plastic corks, and can lids.

The machines are available as individual units or as part of filler-capper combinations and triblocks.

Capping machines for different closure types and containers

When it comes to used capping technology, the machine and existing equipment must be precisely suited to the intended container and closure. Different capping systems are used depending on the application. These include:

  • Crown cap capping machines: For glass bottles with crown caps.
  • Screw-cap capping machines: For plastic and aluminium screw caps.
  • Twist-off capping machines: For glass containers with twist-off caps, in particular jars with suitable necks.
  • Corking machines: For bottles with natural corks or plastic corks.
  • Can cappers / seamers: For sealing beverage cans with can lids.

Cappers can be designed as stand-alone machines or integrated directly with other process steps. Our range of machinery includes, for example, cappers within fill-and-cap systems and rinsers-fill-cap triblocks.

Typical applications of capping technology

Within filling lines, capping machines are used in direct conjunction with the filling process. In our machine portfolio, capping technology is found in lines for glass bottles, polyethylene terephthalate bottles and cans, among others.

Depending on the container, they can handle, for example, crown corks, plastic screw caps, aluminium screw caps, twist-off closures, corks or can ends.

Twist-off capping machines are used in particular for glass packaging of foodstuffs such as tinned foods, sauces, jams and similar products.

The specific suitability of a used machine must be assessed on the basis of the container, the closure, the required line output and the existing plant configuration.

Machine conversion, retrofitting and modernisation

In addition to trading in used machines, we offer a comprehensive range of technical services for the adaptation and modernisation of existing machines and production lines.

With our own workshop, CNC manufacturing facilities and expertise in mechanical, electrical and programming engineering, we are able to carry out a wide range of work in-house. Our aim is to ensure that existing machinery can continue to be used to meet new production requirements and to adapt it technically.

Our services include:

  • Format conversion: Adapting existing machines to different bottle formats and container geometries.
  • Mechanical modifications: Adaptation and manufacture of mechanical components and any required change parts.
  • Retrofitting: Adding to or adapting machine components and technical functions, insofar as the existing machine design permits.
  • Electrical modernisation: Adaptation and replacement of electrical components and control systems.
  • Container alignment: Testing and project-specific implementation of alignment functions on suitable machines.
  • Overhaul and maintenance: Mechanical and electrical repair work, as well as testing of existing machine components.
  • Dismantling and commissioning: Professional dismantling, loading, transport organisation, installation and commissioning at the new production site.

The scope of a conversion or retrofit depends on the specific machine model, the existing equipment and the technical requirements.

Frequently asked questions about capping machines

Depending on the machine type and existing equipment, various types of closures may be suitable. These include crown caps, plastic screw caps, aluminium screw caps, twist-off caps, natural and plastic corks, and tin lids. The specific configuration of the capper is always the decisive factor. For used machines, we therefore check the existing equipment in conjunction with the desired container and closure format.

Our range depends on the stock of machines currently available. This may include crown cap capping machines, screw cap capping machines, twist-off capping machines, corking machines and can capping machines or seamers. The capping technology may be available as a stand-alone machine or as an integrated unit within a filler, triblock or a complete filling line.

The key factors are container type, container format, closure type and required line output. For twist-off closures, the design of the glass finish and the matching closure format must also be taken into account. It must also be clarified how the capper is to be integrated into the existing or planned filling line.

Yes. In addition to individual machines, Kahl & Schlichterle also supplies complete filling and packaging lines. Capping units, for example, can form part of a filler-capper or a rinser-filler-capper triblock. In the case of can lines, the can seamer is integrated into the line process accordingly. Specific availability depends on the current stock of machinery.

Yes, Kahl & Schlichterle has its own in-house facilities for the overhaul, maintenance and retrofitting of beverage machinery. This includes mechanical and electrical work as well as programming; CNC milling and turning technology and 3D printing are also available. Which modifications to a specific capper are technically feasible and economically viable must be assessed on the basis of the specific machine, the type of closure and the desired formats.
